First things first- I don’t paint anything with a face. I guess that makes me a vegan of sorts. I find that I fight too hard to capture eyes, cheekbones, shadow, etc. It’s frustrating to me and it typically ends up being a screwed up mess.

My process for commissions is really very dependent on what the client wants.If I’m only given general subject matter then it’s a matter of shaking whatever is in my head out onto the canvas.

If however it’s a specific location, city, street or house I may ask for pictures of the subject matter to study. Once I have the image in my head I will paint a rough outline and ask the client their thoughts. If it’s in keeping with their vision I will continue the piece adding details as I go along. Having a look at the space where it will hang and having rough dimensions are also helpful in the process.

Another important aspect of commission work for me is the dominant color scheme. Some people just don’t like orange or pink, so I’m very conscious of this as I work. My paintings are always bright but i can always tone them down a notch or two if it’s necessary. I want my work to be noticed but typically I don’t want it to be jarring to the viewer.

Pieces are priced based on the size of the canvas, length of time to produce the work and supplies used.
